Arviq • Bowhead Whale

Bowhead whales have long been an important subsistence food and the species was decimated by commercial whaling. Orcas are probably the only other predator capable of killing this large whale.

Bowhead whales use their long, fine baleen plates to filter tiny planktonic animals from huge quantities of water. They have the longer baleen (over 4 metres!) than any other whales species.
