Ahaanliq • Long-tailed Duck

Bird - Clangula hyemalis

The Long-tailed Duck breeds in tundra and taiga areas throughout the Arctic and migrates south during the winter. In general, Long-tailed Ducks dive deeper and are found further offshore than other species of ducks. While their plumage changes throughout the year, males have distinctive bold patterning of black, brown, white and grey, with two long tail feathers. Long-tailed Ducks are also more vocal than most sea ducks, and males make their characteristic calls frequently and loudly during the breeding season.
